CASS NORTH DAKOTAwas named in honour of railroad executive, George Washington Cass circa 1873.  Davenport, Fargo, Erie and Normanna are townships in this county.  Cass County borders Clay County in the state of Minnesota and is directly south of Manitoba.  Cass County is on the Red River. The Red River North headwaters at the conflux of 2 rivers – the Otter Tail and the Bois de Sioux, near Breckenridge, MN. The 550 mile long Red River dissects the northern part of North Dakota from Minnesota, running north to old Fort Garry Manitoba, eventually emptying into Lake Winnipeg.   Farms and ranches dot the rolling plains of the fertile Red River Valley. It is very easy to understand why early settlers migrated freely between North Dakota, Manitoba and Saskatchewan during the period from 1870 to 1925. The international border was unpatrolled and the Red River was a major water route used for trade by the early native people and fur traders that knew no boundaries.  Dakota is the Sioux word for friend.

Homesteaders naturally followed these hardy pioneers, heading northward into the wilderness of the Canadian wilds where free land was readily available.  A man needing a woman had to bring her.  And the sturdy female pioneer came.

Homesteading began earlier here than in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.  The Dakota Territory was opened in 1863 for homesteading, with the first registered homestead in 1868 made by Joseph Rolette in the Northern Red River Valley.   It was to this fertile valley that several McCutcheons migrated:  Sarah and Hannah being only 2 of them.  Sarah and John arrived first.
