David McCutcheon ill after L.O.L. Meeting

From the Creemore Star the details of his life and his passing are learned.  It tells that on Tuesday evening Mr. McCutcheon accompanied his sons to a District Orange meeting at Nottawasaga in which he took part in the work by giving the lecture in his usual creditable manner.  About an hour later he took a weak spell and after being revived was taken to his home where he had medical care.  He did not rest well throughout the night and gradually weakened.  At about 10:00 a.m. Wednesday he lapsed into a coma, his death following at 1:30 Wednesday June 11th.  He was a son of the late William McCutcheon who emigrated from Northern Ireland and settled on Lot 12, Concession 6, Nottawasaga Township in 1844.  David was born in 1851 and attended what is now Bayview School when it was first established.  His playmates were the Calloway’s, Currie’s, Matchett’s, Birtle’s, Dowling’s, Taylor’s, Honeyford’s and others who were pioneer residents north of Creemore.  Following the death of his parents, he became owner of the old homestead and married Flora Armstrong who survives him together with a family of six sons and one daughter. In February 1939, he and Mrs. McCutcheon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Mr. McCutcheon’s father was an officer in the Militia. The son, likewise, was a true Britisher.  He joined Purple Hill L.O.L. when that Lodge flourished on the 4th Line south of Creemore, transferring to the Creemore Lodge at its inception.  He held all offices in the primary lodge and was one of the first district masters for Nottawasaga.  His interest in the Order never waned and it is significant that his last activities were carried out in the association he had served so long.  He was a Presbyterian and a Conservative.

Despite his age, Mr. McCutcheon never really grew old.  His stalwart figure was to be seen nearly every Saturday in Creemore.  He was tall and straight and except around the farm he never used a cane.  His faculties were all fully maintained and for information on any pioneer history he was a remarkable authority.

The members of his family are as follows: William at Horne Payne, James in the Army training at Edmonton, Charles at Regina, and Norman at Cumshewa Inlet, B. C., Clarence, David Angus;  and an only daughter Flora Belleare at home.  The funeral was held under Orange auspices on Saturday 14th.

☺☺      Lived to be a Nonagenarian or more.
