CHARLOTTE FREE (1869-1936)

ii.        Charlotte FREE (5) (Mary McCutcheon-4; William McCutcheon-3; Samuel McCutcheon-2; Samuel McCutcheon-1) was born in 1869 in Nottawasaga Township, Simcoe County and she died on the 30th August 1936 in Rainy River, ON.  She married William MacMILLAN on the 3rd October 1893 in Nipissing, ON.  William was born in 1867 in Invernesshire, Scotland and he died in 1956 in Rainy River, ON. His parents were Duncan MacMillan and Jessie McBain.

CHARLOTTE FREE

Charlotte Free and William raised a family of four sons and two daughters.  William MacMillan immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1886 from Inverness, Scotland.  He learned the blacksmith trade in his father’s shop.  Upon arriving in Canada, he first obtained work in the nickel mine at Coppercliff.  Shortly thereafter, he met and married Charlotte Free.

In 1900 they relocated to the district of Rainy River, Ontario.   Rainy River was an unsettled area located along the Minnesota-Ontario border, about 165 miles southeast of Winnipeg and 14 miles south of Lake of the Woods. The Rainy River district was a forested area, home to 130 species of birds along with large populations of moose, black bear and deer.  They travelled via CPR to the end of the line, then completed their journey by boat to Mine Center.  Mine Center is located about 45 miles east of Fort Frances, Ontario.  While the family remained in Mine Center, William went into the bush to prepare to bring his family with him.

In the fall of 1901, William purchased the rights to the south half of Lot 6, Concession 3 from the original patentee/grantee, Robert Nuttall.  This land was located in Carpenter Township, Emo.  When he purchased this lot, there were only 2 acres cleared.  The rest of the land was heavily bushed.  In the spring of 1902 he built a log cabin and Charlotte and 5 children came to live on the homestead.

The next 5 years were the toughest, clearing his land by hand during the summer months, then working at blacksmithing in the winter months to earn some cash.  He finally had enough money to buy 2 horses in 1907 which expedited the tree clearing.

He purchased pre-emption on more land in Dance Township.  Pre-emption was given to 80 acres that a settler could buy for $1.00 an acre.  This particular land had lots of good timber that provided the family with income and he harvested it of the white pine that he used to build his new frame house in 1915.  By 1927, he had enough lumber for his new barn.  By now the children were teenagers and socializing.  Many a dance was held at the house for the youth in the community.

Both William and Charlotte were active for many years in the building of the Emo Community, from the school, to the town council, and the annual fair.  Charlotte won many prizes at the Emo fair for her entries in the dairy, butter and baking classes.

Two of their sons, William Duncan and Donald Elmer enlisted in the army in World War I and their third son was Killed in Action in Italy on the 15th May 1944 in World War II.

Their last name is spelled “MacMillan” not “McMillan”.

NOTE:   Their story was found in the book “The River of Time – A History of Emo” pages 85-87.  www.ourroots.com.

ROY FREE (1889-1969)

viii.       Roy FREE (5) (Mary McCutcheon-4; William McCutcheon-3; Samuel McCutcheon-2; Samuel McCutcheon-1) was born on the 16th August 1889 in Creemore, ON and he died on the 8th May 1969 IN Guelph, ON.  He was married twice:  First he married Sarah Jane WHEELER (1894-16th November 1918) on the 16th August 1916 in Wellington.  Her father was Daniel Wheeler and Aramintha Morris .  Second he married Sarah Anne HARPER (1893 – 3rd April 1970) on the 16th September 1925.  Her parents were James Harper and Elizabeth Hues.

NOTE:   Why Roy’s last name is FREE and not DAVIDSON, has not been explained or found.  When Mary Elizabeth died, he was only 1 year old and he went to live with his Uncle David McCutcheon and Aunt Flora Armstrong, not with his ½ siblings, Sarah and Charles Davidson.

On his marriage record on the 16th August 1916, when he married his first wife, his parents were listed as:  David Free and Lottie McCutcheon.

On his marriage record on the 16th September 1925, when he married his second wife, his parents were listed as:  David Free and Mary McCutcheon.

It is possible that Roy was Mary Elizabeth’s grand-child, a child of one of her children.  No birth records have been found for Roy.

My mother is the daughter of Clara Mildred Hilts. Her name is Vilda Marguerite (Dutnall) Laing. She says Ron Hilts’ wife went by the name Georgina.
