Elizabeth immigrated to Canada with her family from Belfast in 1855.  This family came to Canada at the end of the “Infamous Famine Migration” from Ireland.

In 1858, 9 years before Canada became a nation, the town Collingwood was incorporated.  The area had other names associated with it, including Hurontario because it was situated at the end of “Hurontario Street” which runs from Lake Huron (a part of Georgian Bay) south to Lake Ontario (Nottawa and Hens-and-Chicks Harbour).

Prior to the 1840’s, when European settlers and freed black slaves settled the area, it was inhabited by the Iroquois along the nearby Niagara Escarpment.

In 1855 the Ontario, Simcoe and Huron railway arrived at Collingwood which in turn opened up the waterways for shipping goods to Chicago, USA and Port Arthur-Fort Williams (later changed to Thunder Bay), Ontario.  Along with the new industry came employment; ship building in the shipyards, foundries for manufacturing steel hulls; and sailors needed to ply their trade on the Great Lakes.  The shipping industry provided over 10 % of the employment in Collingwood and it was to this industry that the Thomas Alexander family gravitated to.
