Obituary for Sarah Mary Smith

ACTONFREE PRESS  – February 22, 1923

Full of years with an active useful Christian life behind her, Sarah Smith, widow of the late Thomas McCutcheon, of the second line Erin passed away on Monday at the home of her daughter Mrs. Hugh Mitchell, Eramosa.

Mrs. McCutcheon was born on the fifth line,Erin.  After spending half a century in happy married life with her husband, the shadow of death came, and he was called to his long home leaving her a widow with eleven sons and daughters.

Their homestead for forty years was the well-known farm on the second line, where their splendid brick house and farm buildings were always admired by the countryside and the travelling public.  It is eighteen years since Mr. McCutcheon passed away.

Mrs. McCutcheon had her church home at the Disciples’ Church, Everton. The services there were always dear to her, and her worship was sincere.  The eight sons and three daughters of the family all survive.

They are: Matthew, of the third line; Hugh Robert, of the second line; John, town line between Erin and Eramosa; William, on the gravel road; Mrs. Hugh Mitchell, Eramosa; Mrs. O. McCullough, Guelph; Mrs. W. J. Smith, Everton.

The funeral was held on Thursday afternoon last.  Interment being made at Everton Cemetery.

    Hello,
I am a descendant of Clara McCutcheon and Hugh John Watson.
    She was my maternal grand-mother.
If you need more graveside pics, I do have a few that would help your blog.

  2. Sandra Chambers Gallipeau says:

    Hi,

I came across you website while doing a search for my ancestors. George Mitchell (b. 1819 d 1902) and Grace Isedale Thompson (b. Nov 15 1830 d. Dec 29 1925) were my great-great grandparents (daughter Annie married James Chambers). I recently came across a document about the Mitchell farm I thought you might be interested in. The document is a history of the Mitchell farms and is on the website for Wellington County Museum and Archives http://www.wcm.on.ca/tweedsmuir/pdf/TownshipofGuelphEramosa/Rock-a-LongWI/1/028.pdf. I have a link to Annie and James’s grave but have not found George and Grace’s yet. I also have a link to the obit. for Grace. Please let me know if you have found anything else on the Mitchell family. BTW your website looks great! I am just getting started with putting a site together.

    Hi,
One of my father’s cousins Adam James Spence married Annie Mae McCutcheon in 1920. He died in 1956 and she died in 1973 and are buried in Everton Cemetery in Eramosa. Annie Mae McCcutcheon was the daughter of Robert Hugh McCutcheon (1857-1932) and Margaret Ann McCallum (1858-1941).
I am trying to find out if Adam and Annie had any children, and if so what were their names and dates of birth?
    Regards,
    Adam Spence.

  4. Joan Smith says:

I am Joan Smith (nee McCutcheon). My parents were Wilfred and May McCutcheon (nee Hancock). I didn’t know my grandparents David and Elizabeth (nee Moore) and have a vague memory of my grandmother’s funeral. I think I was about 5 years old.

    • Adam Spence says:

      Hi, Joan.
I notice you comment above on the McCutcheon family. As in previous comments above, I am seeking to find out if Annie Mae McCutcheon (1892-1973) had any children. Her parents were Robert Hugh McCutheon (1857-1932) and Margaret Ann McCallum (1858-1941). They lived in the Erin district. Annie married Adam J L Spence (1888-1956) in Toronto in 1920. If you have any knowledge of Annie, do you know anyone who might? I live in Stoney Creek, Ontario and visited their graves in Everton last year.
      Regards,
      Adam Spence.
