D: Sarah McCUTCHEON (4) (David McCutcheon-3; Samuel McCutcheon-2; Samuel McCutcheon-1) was born in Mulmur Township, Dufferin County, ON. on the 8th August 1858 and she died on the 2nd March 1947 in Everett, Snohomish, Washington. She married John Milton McKEE (16th March – 11 July 1921 Everett, Washington) on the 15th October 1879 in Wellington, ON. His parents were Henry McKee and Charlotte Ann Hunter. ♥ ‡‡
The Story of John McKee:
John McKee, one of Everett’s pioneer citizens, is now the owner of the Broadway Theater, the most popular moving picture house in the city, and he is also prominently known in connection with the Improved Order of Red Men, being great Sachem (Chief) in the state. He was born about sixty miles north of Toronto, Canada, March 16th 1858, his parents being Henry and Charlotte McKee, who were natives of the Emerald Isle, but in 1840 crossed the Atlantic Ocean to Canada and became prosperous farming people of that country. There the father died on his farm in 1894 at the age of eighty three and ten months, having long survived his wife, who passed away in 1869 at the age of fifty years. In their family were ten children, seven sons and three daughters, of whom John McKee is the only one now residing in the United States with the exception of James McKee of Fargo, North Dakota.
After attending the common schools of Whitfield, Canada, John McKee began providing for his own support when a youth of twenty. He went west to Fargo, North Dakota, then Dakota Territory, in 1878 and in that locality followed farming for four years and also engaged in merchandising at Erie, North Dakota. He erected the first building in that town and there conducted his mercantile interests for eight years, after which he lived retired in Erie from 1891 until 1893. In the fall of the latter year he arrived in Everett and for 3 years was engaged in merchandising in this city. In 1897 he went to Alaska, where he spent a year, and following his return filled the office of chief Deputy of Snohomish County for four years. He was also deputy revenue collector for the government at Everett for four years and for six years he conducted a real estate business. In 1915 he established the Broadway Theater, which is today a popular and liberally patronized moving picture house of the city, presenting the best attractions of the film companies.
On the 15th of October 1879 in Dufferin County Ontario, Mr. McKee was united in marriage to Miss Sarah McCutcheon, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David McCutcheon, pioneer residents of Whitfield, Ontario. Seven children have been born to them.
Herbert, born in Erie, North Dakota on the 20th July 1880, is married and resides at Clear Lake, Washington, where he has charge of interests of the Clear Lake Lumber Company.
Violet, born in Erie in 1883, is a graduate of the Everett schools.
Milton, born in Erie in 1890, has charge of the office of Rucker Brothers of Everett.
Mary, born in Ontario, Canada, in 1892 is attending the University of Washington.
Everett, born in 1894 is book-keeper for Rucker Brothers of Everett.
Clarence and Eunice, twins, born in Everett on the 28th April 1899 are now high school pupils.
The religious faith of the family is that of the Presbyterian Church and fraternally Mr. McKee is well known. He is a past master of Pen Lodge Number 95, F & A M of Everett and has……………………. (not readable). He has also attained high rank in the Improved Order of Red Men, being great Sachem (Chief) in the state. His political allegiance is given to the Republican Party, but while being well informed on the questions and issues of the day he has never been an office seeker. From the age of twenty years he has worked his way upward by reason of his resourcefulness and ability, making his opportunities count for the utmost, and today is one of the leading citizens of Everett.
The preceding biography was published in the book “Washington, West of the Cascades” in 1917 and is now in the public domain. The name Snohomish is taken from the name of the dominant local Native American tribe “sdoh-doh-hohbsh” whose meaning is widely disputed.
The movie “Bustin’ Loose” with Richard Pryor was partially filmed here in 1981.
This family became extinct as most of their children didn’t marry and the one who did had no children. After John died, Sarah moved to Seattle Washington in 1922.
Both Sarah and her sister Hannah lived in Erie, Cass, North Dakota for a while. Hannah and Peter Laidlaw also resided in Cass.
